Spinning the #NBA Wheel of Justice

 Look at All These Rumors….

The 2016 NBA trade deadline is Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. Eastern. Last year, Goran Dragic lit a fuse that caused the 2015 trade deadline to deliver what was one of the busiest deadline days the NBA’s ever seen. The end result was 11 completed trades, many of which came right at the 3 p.m. deadline, and a stunning 37 different players changing teams on that day alone. That doesn’t even count the deals that went down prior to the deadline, including Rajon Rondo to the Mavericks, Timofey Mozgov, J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert to the Cavaliers and Jeff Green to the Grizzlies.

This year, the trade deadline is unlikely to be as busy. Teams everywhere are gearing up for the unprecedented salary cap jump that will reach $89 million this summer, giving every team cap space and setting the stage for massive contracts to be thrown around at an admittedly top-heavy class of free agents.

However, the NBA always finds ways to one-up itself. Here are all the important trades and rumors that have happened this season.

5 Almost Trades That Didn’t Happen

1.

The Houston Rockets had one major asset in the 1990s – Hakeem Olajuwon. When his agent went public to say that the superstar wasn’t happy with contract negotiations, the first to pick up the phone multiple times was the Miami Heat. At one point Glen Rice and Steve Smith were offered for Olajuwon, but it never came to be.

The most dominant player of the early 1970s was almost used in a spectacular switch from his beloved Lakers to the Chicago Bulls on the whim of owners Jack Kent Cooke and Arthur Wirtz. LA man Cooke owned both the NBA and NHL franchise which would have involved NHL star Bobby Hull as well – with the upstart ABA and WHA competitions trying to lure the best hockey and basketball talent with higher salaries. The idea was for Chamberlain to help the ailing Bulls and for Hull to come to the Kings. Didn’t happen of course.

Some trades get complicated – starting a domino effect where one man packs his bags, only to start an avalanche of people in transit. In 2011 Chris Paul was heading to LA with Lamar Odom, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and Kevin Martin going to New Orleans. The strange trade also would have seen Pau Gasol go to the Rockets. Team owners got their backs up and it fell through.

4.

Photo by Mike Powell/Getty ImagesThe mid 1980s was a great time to be a Lakers player. So the potential double trade off between them and the Dallas Mavericks in 1986 which would have seen Byron Scott and James Worthy go one way, with Mark Aguirre and Roy Tarpley go to California, could have changed the complexion of the NBA in that period.

Of all the trades that could and should have happened – the Houston Rockets passing of Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft has to be up there. They had the number 1 pick and if they sent 1983 Rookie of the Year Ralph Sampson to the Trailblazers, the door was open to snatch Jordan.

Duke at North Carolina – 9 p.m.(EST) ESPN

Not a lot of fire burning in this rivalry like years’ past, but those pesky devils are coming off their best win (eye-roll) of the season.  The Tar-Heels are coming off of two losses, a super win against BC (winless in ACC, eye-roll), and a win against Pitt.  Sure the Heels have Marcus Paige but does anyone care about the Tar Heels anymore?

1. NBA Bounce House

You wondered how long it was going to take before some #NBA player became fed-up with those sleeved-uniforms and for LeBron, he wasn’t having it anymore.  It’s like when Costanza made the Yankees wear all-cotton uniforms – #WorstIdeaEver.  Hopefully soon, Mr. Silver will realize these too were a turr-able idea and give the shooters their free-range back in their shoulders.

Curry continues to roll in the early going

Stephen Curry scored 31 points and made seven three-pointers in the Warriors’ 112-108 win over the Clippers on Wednesday. Curry has scored 179 points in his five games played this season. Over the last 40 seasons, the only other players to score as many points as Curry through their first five games of a season are Adrian Dantley (1980-81) and Michael Jordan, who did it three times (1986-87, 1989-90 and 1991-92).

Curry’s 28 three-pointers made are by far the most any player has made through five games of a season since the NBA instituted the three-point shot in 1979-80. The previous high was 21 by Ryan Anderson (2011-12), O.J. Mayo (2012-13) and Trevor Ariza (2014-15).

Howard is perfect from the field

Dwight Howard went 10-for-10 from the field and hauled down 14 rebounds in the Rockets’ overtime win over the Magic on Wednesday night. It marked the second time that Howard has shot 10-for-10 or better from the field in a game, having also done that on February 24, 2010 (11-for-11), ironically while he was with the Magic against the Rockets. The only other players to attempt 10 or more shots from the field and make all of them multiple times in the shot-clock era are Wilt Chamberlain (8 times), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (twice), Bernard King (twice) and Karl Malone (twice).

Blazers’ backcourt has a big night in UtahAltX.Logo.white

Damian Lillard scored 35 points and starting backcourt mate C.J. McCollum chipped in with 27 in the Blazers’ win in Utah on Wednesday night. It’s the first time in nearly 20 years that Portland’s starting backcourt each produced at last 25 points in a road game, since Rod Strickland (32) and Clyde Drexler (30) did it against the SuperSonics in a losing effort in Seattle on January 15, 1995.

Suns win with a team effort

Eric Bledsoe led the Suns with 19 points and was the team’s leader in assists with eight in a 118-97 win over Sacramento on Wednesday night. It marked the most points the Suns have scored in a game in which they did not have a single player score 20 points or hand out 10 assists since December 8, 1994, when they defeated the Nets by a final of 133-106 with Wayman Tisdale and Dan Majerle producing a team high 19 points and Elliot Perry leading the way with nine assists.

Beal’s three-pointer beats Spurs

Bradley Beal‘s three-pointer with less than a second remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Wizards a 102-99 victory over the Spurs on Wednesday night. Beal is the first player to win a game with a three-pointer with less than a second remaining in the fourth quarter or overtime against San Antonio since the Mavericks’ Steve Nash made a shot from beyond the arc with 0.6 seconds left in overtime in a 126-123 Dallas win on December 26, 2001.

Pacers frontcourt controls the boards in win over Celtics

The Pacers starting frontcourt, Lavoy Allen (11 rebounds), Paul George (10) and Jordan Hill (10) each recorded double-digits in rebounds in the Pacers’ 100-98 win over the Celtics on Wednesday. Indiana received 10 or more rebounds from each of their frontcourt starters in only one game in the previous six seasons combined (2009-10 to 2014-15), on January 8, 2013 (George, David West and Roy Hibbert).AltX.Logo.white

Nets fall to 0-5

The Nets lost their fifth consecutive game to open the 2015-16 season, dropping a 101-87 decision to the Hawks. Brooklyn has lost by margins of 15, 17, 10, 7 and 14 points in their five defeats. The only other teams in NBA history to lose each of their first five games of a season, all by more than six points, after appearing in the playoffs the previous season, are the 1966-67 Baltimore Bullets (first five games) and 1957-58 Minneapolis Lakers (first six games).

Cavs win by 10 after trailing by 15

The Cavaliers overcame a 15-point deficit and defeated the Knicks by a score of 96-86 on Wednesday night. It marked the first time Cleveland won a game by a double-digit margin after trailing by at least 15 points since November 3, 2009, when the Cavs overcame a 18-point deficit and beat Washington by a score of 102-90.

Raptors produce road wins over Western foes on consecutive nights

One night after beating the Mavericks in Dallas, the Raptors (5-0) beat the Thunder in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night to improve upon the best start in franchise history. It’s the third time since the start of the 2014-15 season that Toronto has won road games against Western Conference opponents on consecutive days, having won games in Sacramento and Utah last December 2nd and 3rd; and against the Clippers in Los Angeles and Nuggets in Denver on December 27th and 28th. No other Eastern Conference team has more than two sets of back to back road wins on consecutive days against teams from the West over that span, and the only other East teams that have done that more than once are Atlanta and Detroit.

2. Ice-Ice Baby

Burmistrov’s late goal wins it for the Jets

Winnipeg’s Alexander Burmistrov scored a tiebreaking goal with 2:05 left to play in the third period and his goal was the game-winner for the Jets in their 4-2 victory over the Maple Leafs in Toronto. It was the second time this season that a Jets player scored a go-ahead goal in the final three minutes of the third period; Dustin Byfuglien snapped a tie with 88 seconds remaining in regulation time in Winnipeg’s home game against the Flames on October 16. The Jets are the only NHL team to have scored more than one such goal this season. Before this season, the Jets had tallied only three tiebreaking goals in the last three minutes of the third period since the team relocated to Winnipeg from Atlanta in 2011.

Blues win after allowing five goals in the first

Vladimir Tarasenko’s goal with 1:06 remaining in overtime earned the Blues a 6-5 win over the Blackhawks in Chicago, a game in which St. Louis trailed, 5-2, at the end of the first period. It was the 11th time in NHL history that a team won a game in which it allowed five first-period goals, and it was the first such win in Blues history. Before Wednesday’s victory by St. Louis, the last time an NHL team won a game in that manner was when the Lightning beat the Flyers, 8-7, in Philadelphia on November 18, 2010, after Tampa Bay trailed, 5-4, at the first intermission.

Fehr nets another short-handed goal

Eric Fehr’s short-handed goal midway through the third period gave the Penguins a 3-0 lead in a game they would go on to win 3-2 in Vancouver. Fehr also tallied a short-handed goal in his Penguins debut on October 31 against the Maple Leafs. He is the first player in NHL history to score a short-handed goal in each of his first two games with a team.

1. NBA Bounce House

Duncan sets NBA record for wins with one team

Tim Duncan scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Spurs‘ 94-84 victory over the Knicks on Monday. Duncan has 954 regular-season wins with the Spurs, passing John Stockton (953 with Jazz) for the most victories by a player with one team in NBA history. Rounding out the top three is Stockton’s teammate Karl Malone, who had 919 wins during his tenure with Utah.

Duncan has a 954-381 (.715) regular-season record with the Spurs. Among the 10 players with at least 700 wins with one team, only one has a higher winning percentage with that team: Duncan’s teammate Tony Parker. With Monday’s win, Parker improved to 728-284 (.719) in his Spurs career.

25,000 points for James

With his 22 points scored in the Cavaliers‘ win on Monday, LeBron James reached 25,001 regular-season points in the NBA, in his 915th career game. James is the 20th player in NBA history to score 25,000 points; only three of those players reached that mark in as few games as he did. Ahead of him on the list are Wilt Chamberlain (691 games), Michael Jordan (782), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (889).

James also added 11 assists in Monday’s game, becoming the sixth player to record a double-double in the game in which he surpassed 25,000 points, joining Chamberlain (who had a triple double when he reached that mark in 1968), Jerry West (1973), Abdul-Jabbar (1980), Karl Malone (1997), and Tim Duncan (2014).

Westbrook joins elite groupAltX.Logo.white

Russell Westbrook totaled 25 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds in the Thunder’s loss on Monday. Westbrook has 121 points, 37 assists, and 30 rebounds in four games this season. Only two other players in NBA history had at least 120 points, 30 assists, and 30 rebounds over their first four games of a season, and each did so twice: Oscar Robertson (1961-62 and 1966-67 seasons) and Larry Bird (1984-85 and 1987-88 seasons).

Harden leads the way for Rockets

James Harden scored 37 points as the Rockets earned their first win of the season, a 110-105 triumph over the Thunder. Dwight Howard had the second-highest points output for Houston in Monday’s game, with 16 points. Last season, Harden played in 12 games in which he scored at least 20 more points than any of his teammates. Only one other player had at least five such games in the 2014-15 campaign: Russell Westbrook, with eight.

Warriors win big after trailing at the end of the opening quarter

The Warriors defeated the Grizzlies, 119-69, on Monday after trailing by one point at the end of the first quarter. Golden State is just the second team in NBA history to win a game by at least 50 points after being outscored in the opening quarter. The first such instance occurred on February 1, 1983, when the Bulls came out victorious over the Rockets, 129-76, after also trailing by a point at the end of the first.

Curry has another big quarter

Stephen Curry scored 30 points, including 21 in the third quarter, of the Warriors’ 119-69 victory over the Grizzlies. It’s the second straight game in which Curry scored at least 20 points in a quarter, having netted 28 points in the third period of the Warriors’ win over the Pelicans on Saturday. The last player with a 20-point quarter in consecutive games was Jamal Crawford in January 2007. Crawford had 23 fourth-quarter points on January 24 against the Suns and had two 20-point quarters in his next game on January 26 versus the Heat (20 points in second quarter and 23 in third).

2. ‘Ockey News – The Quick and the Dead

Toews and Kane find success against Quick

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane each scored a goal for the Blackhawks as they posted a 4-2 victory over the Kings which ended L.A.’s winning streak at seven games. Toews has scored 11 goals in his 21 regular-season games against Quick, which ties him with Radim Vrbata for the third-most goals versus the two-time Stanley Cup-winning netminder, behind Shane Doan and Patrick Marleau (12 each). Kane scored only one goal in his first 13 regular-season games versus Quick but he’s tallied seven goals in eight regular-season games against him since then.

Lupul nets a pair in Leafs’ victory

Joffrey Lupul scored two goals in the Maple Leafs’ 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars’ in Toronto. It was Lupul’s first multiple-goal game since the last time the Stars played at Air Canada Centre, a 5-3 Maple Leafs victory on Dec. 2, 2014 in which Lupul notched the final two Toronto goals. Lupul finished the 2014-15 season by scoring only one goal in his last 30 games but he’s the Maple Leafs’ leading scorer with five goals this season.

Kevin Love Says Kelly Olynyk Injured His Shoulder On Purpose

1. Love lost between two teams?…

Movies have sure lied to us over the years about what to do with a dislocated shoulder – I always thought that you just slammed it back in and resumed ninja-chopping bad-guys – apparently for Kevin Love, it doesn’t work like that and I demand an investigation.

If you witnessed this game from the grassy knoll, then you saw what was at least, white-on-white-violence of a nonsense play from Kelly Olynyk in the first quarter – to, at worst, a full blown conspiracy with intent to dislocate – judge for yourself.  Intent seems to be the word the Cavaliers are using as Jae Crowder seemed to take the brunt of Cleveland’s backlash.  First, by JR Smith exhibiting a flagrant backhand that saw him ejected – then, secondly, Perkins giving him a cross-check – not ejected.  Olynyk owes that dude some beers for all that abuse – since he was held out of the game until the 4th, to avoid personal retaliation.

So for Cleveland their first series sweep is, more bitter than sweet, it’s bittersweet.  JR Smith is lost to a one-game suspension, and Kevin Love, who clearly never watched any Lethal Weapon movies, could be out two weeks.  That could be a huge difference if the Cavaliers have to face the Bulls before their trip to the Eastern Conference Finals – they will.  But before everyone got a trophy for participating, the NBA was a lot tougher – Hollywood never lied to us then and our basketball players were really given something to cry about – just ask Michael Jordan when he played Boston, New York, Detroit, etc…

Austin Rivers Plays The Game Of His Life, Clips-Spurs Tied At Two

2. To be the champ, you got to BEAT the Champ…

When you’re down to the defending champions and YOU NEED a “W”, you can’t just turn to anyone.  You got to find the guy on your bench you know, someone who has been thru it, WITH YOU, the highs AND the lows.  It’s time we make way and give the coaches’ kid the respect they deserve.  Thank You, Austin Rivers!  Thank you for your ability to play horribly for three years to finally getting a chance to play horribly on a good team that your Dad happens to coach – the odds were against you, but you pulled it off, somehow.

Austin saved his best game of his career to save the Clippers and tie the series with the Spurs.  In 17 minutes, Austin Rivers scored 16 points off the bench from a team that has none, to help them win, 114-105.  It is not often you say, out-loud, that Austin Rivers was the third best guard on the floor and you may never say it again.  Austin only missed one shot and it might be unfair to expect this level of performance – but if you are a fan of variance then, then this is your poster child and to him we salute you, under-achiever.

3. …No One Here Gets Out Alive…

This is a matchup that was hampered by injuries going in – the Trail Blazers without Wes Matthews and Arron Afflalo was out for two games – seems to be getting worse. The Grizzlies lost point guard Mike Conley in the third quarter after he took an elbow to the face from C.J. McCollum.

Other people that have seen time on the M*A*S*H* list include Portland backup center Chris Kaman and Memphis backup point guard Beno Udrih.  Injuries may mean more to these teams, than any other in the conference – because it appears that Memphis and Portland pushed in all their chips in the beginning of the season to make a deep run in the playoffs – only to be blown up, for falling short.

Marc Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge and Jeff Green all have options to become free agents at the end and so the question begins with Aldridge.  Does he leave Portland because of an early exit sweep?  Does Gasol come back?  Next up for the Grizz would be the Warriors and they’ll need Conley healthy to have any chance.  At full strength this matchup, could have been a great one – instead it is  just another chapter of two teams that are good, but have yet to find whatever it is, to take that next step and time is running out for both.

4. So you’re telling me there’s a chance…

Is this the start of a series or just delaying the inevitable?  Last night the Mavericks chose to play this lineup for 18 minutes: JJ Barea, Al-Farouq Aminu, Monta Ellis, Tyson Chandler and Dirk and it paid off.  Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Dwight Howard couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat, going 3-13 from the line.

Finally it looked like the Mavericks were the hungrier team, doing the little things that limited the Rockets’ advantage from the bench.  So we have to ask ourselves – is this the Rockets taking a game off to clinch it at home, or a trend that extends?  The last thing the Rockets want is Dallas to have hope – we’ll know within the first 5 minutes, if this series is over and all hope is lost for Dallas.

5. Heroes of the Dorm

This is ESPN’s Sharknado!  If you just so happened to watch ESPN 2 last night, this is what you saw.  You were watching people play a video game, that is not even out yet, for a chance to win free tuition for the rest of your time in school – as long as you aren’t Tommy Boy.  This Multi-Online-Battle-Arena also had announcers and as you also might expect also had a reaction – all over the Twitter.

Now in case you forgot, ESPN stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network and for a network that has provided you quality programming like: watching guys play poker, watching guys eat lots of hot dogs, or watching guys play scrabble, then how is this not the next step of evolution?  It’s the First Letter!  Some people whined that this is the cause of ‘Murica‘s obesity problem, playing video games – like sitting on your a$$ watching sports somehow contributes less?  Think of it more like the evolution of competitive chess.

I think the problem is not so much the nerd-fiefdom – the war is over, geeks have won – it’s for a game no one knows about and isn’t out yet (June 2nd) – making it a brilliant marketing ploy on a night that no one watches ESPN 2 anyway – check the numbers.  If they had made it Halo, Call of Duty or Mario Kart -you likely would have had more of a positive response.  In a world where the biggest movies are from comic books, should we not be surprised it has taken this long to get video games on TV?  Everywhere else but here, these shows are huge hits – it makes sense for ESPN 2 to promote this, and break twitter – just like Sharknado did – it’s so bad it’s good – BTW, ASU’s Dream Team suffers brutal loss to California in Heroes of the Dorm championship

Shots Up

To recap Mega Slam Wednesday, it can be said in one word, Thriller!  There were 26 teams in action last night and there was no shortage of close games, game winning attempts, blowouts, playoffs implications and injuries.  It makes you wonder why we sit here on Thursday morning and there is only one game of action tonight.  For all of you avid NBA Fantasy players you get the day off today.  I don’t know about you but I was surely disappointed to find out that Milwaukee and Indiana is the only game I will get to see tonight.  Especially considering the games that went down last night.  We started off the night with the Bulls and Raptors and the Bulls showed why they are still in the hunt in the Eastern Conference and why the Raptors are looking at another first round exit.  raptors_fallingThe Raptors have been reeling of late and given the fact that Kyle Lowry can’t seem to stay on the court over a bruised back, it doesn’t surprise me that Raptors find themselves falling hard down the stretch.  The Bulls however are starting to get healthy and with Derrick Rose seemingly ready to return to action in two weeks, they are a team to look out for moving forward.  We quickly moved to the Miami Heat game and I fully expected them to tank that game given the fact that Dwayne Wade was (resting) and Whiteside had to get ten stitches in his hand the night before.  They unpredictably came out on fire and got huge contributions from Haslem and Dragic.  While they did let the game get close they were able to pull it out and remain on top of Boston, there was a moment with about three minutes left that I thought, are they going to lose on a buzzer beater again!  The Atlanta Hawks got back on track with a victory against the Magic last night.  For all you fantasy players, this was the game to watch.  If you had Millsap, Payton and Korver, then you kicked off the night with a great start.  If you added Carroll, Harris, Teague and Vucevic then you were sitting around 275 on Fan Duel with two guys to play. George Hill hit a shot late to secure victory over the Wizards, who just like the Raptors, are looking at falling into the playoffs.  What happened to this team that started out so hot?  The only thing I can tell you is I believe it all comes down to Gortat for the Wiz.  wizards_fallingI wrote an article three weeks ago, highlighting Gortat, where I was able to determine that if he plays 30 minutes in the game then the Wiz are 19 – 3. Unfortunately, it appears that they haven’t figured this out just yet and so he continues to play around 28 minutes and they continue to lose.  Some other thrilling games were the Nets against the Hornets and I can’t believe I am saying this, the Lakers versus the Timberwolves.  Brook Lopez continued his fantasy hot streak as he lit up the Hornets for 34 points and 10 rebounds, accumulating 54+ fantasy points for only the second time all year.  The Lakers pulled out an overtime victory against Minnesota and the star of the game was Chase Budinger.  If you follow our DiRTy Plays then you would have known, he was one of our key Sleepers last night and he did not disappoint.  What I took away from these games is that if Thad Young plays, Lopez is unstoppable, if Young misses time as he got injured last night, Lopez will be an over priced center for your daily lineup.  As for the Lakers and T-Wolves, what can you say, the T-Wolves give it all they have each night.  The Lakers are quietly tanking in hopes of top 3 draft pick this summer to make one last run with Kobe.  Nothing would please me more than to see the Lakers add Kevin Love this summer, get Randle back and add a strong small forward to the mix, who can shoot threes.  You keep Lin and Clarkson as your point guards and now the Lakers might compete for the 7th or 8th seed next year.  We finished the night with Rockets holding off a late surge by the Pelicans, 95 – 93.  What was crazy about this game was the fact that the Pelicans were up 16 early in the first half, only to relinquish it in the second half.  They were down 12 when Anthony Davis jumped up and stole a full court lob.  As he came down, he tapped shoulders with Cory Brewer and went to the ground.  I immediately thought to myself, there he goes again, he can’t stay on the court and will he be another tragedy of big men who can’t stay healthy.  He did return and almost lead a come back but clearly his shoulder is going to require surgery.  I welcome the thought of an NBA player, playing through the pain, attempting to make the playoffs.  We just don’t see that these days and instead we get a bunch of guys complaining about chartered flights, back to back games and an otherwise grueling schedule #INeedRest.  Don’t get me started on that again but thank you Anthony, you put a glimmer of hope back into my mind that not everyone is as soft as these guys are today. That said, I fully expect Davis to require surgery this summer and hope that he will be back at it next season because the Pelicans are not going to make the playoffs.  The last game was the Spurs and Thunder.  A marquee matchup, highlighted by ESPN, we got what the Thunder really are, HOPELESS!  They got blown off the court and no MVP that I can remember every took a beat down like that so good-bye to this notion that Westbrook deserves to be in the MVP race.  No one put Kevin Love in the MVP race last year, while he put up 26 points and 11 rebounds per game, every night. The reason for this is simple, they didn’t WIN and neither are the Thunder.  Good thing there is only 10 games left and they have a three game lead.

It’s On The Way

Let’s have a quick breakdown of the NBA playoff picture and highlight some key games coming up over the next few days.  In the East we have a crazy race to the 8th spot. It’s going to come down to who can win games against each other down the stretch.  EasternBoston, Indiana, Charlotte and Brooklyn will probably all finish 8 or 9 games under .500 and yet they will be rewarded with a first round playoff birth against the Atlanta Hawks.  Most might think that they would get blown off the court but come playoff time a team that I think can beat the Hawks is the Indiana Pacers. It appears that Paul George is going to return here shortly and if the Pacers can squeak in, while George gets game ready, they would be a team that has the ability to compete with the Hawks.  That said only one game separates these four teams, with the Heat and Bucks, only two and four games ahead.  If one of those teams hits a cold spell or catches the injury plague then we might get two of these bottom feeders in.  It does however, appear that we are going to get three teams under .500 to make the playoffs in the East and that makes me sick!

The Western Conference is an entirely different situation.  If you watch or listen to any sports radio or talk shows on ESPN, they are constantly talking about the WesternThunder and Warriors potential matchup.  I certainly hope that last night’s beat down of the Thunder will quiet these folks.  I don’t care how well Westbrook appears to be playing.  If you actually watch his games, like I do, then you would quickly see that he loses just as many games for his team as he wins.  Yes, he is playing lights out when you look at the stat sheet and for guys like me that are constantly after fantasy value, he is your guy.  If you want to win games in the West, you cannot afford to have a turnover machine and a guy that jacks up 15 foot jumpshots with a one on four break.  That team NEEDS Durant if they are going to have any shot and that has seemingly been shot down.  Look for the Suns to make a push down the stretch and squeak in this year and leave three All-Stars watching from home.  It’s not that I don’t like the Pelicans chances but as I continue to say, Davis is hurt, he is giving it everything he can but he is not enough. Tyreke Evans is not a point guard and until the Pelicans have one that can actually take the court.  I do believe that we will have ten, yes count them, ten teams that go over .500 in the West.

Teams like the Jazz, who have been playing very well during the back half of the season are going to finish a few games under .500 for the season with a bright future.  The talks of just taking the top sixteen teams to the NBA playoffs in the future is something that I embrace.  Embrace change and think outside of the box.  It is visionary people that lead our country, fortune 500 companies and I would like to think lead our major sports.  Do we really need to watch teams that can barely beat the Nuggets on a night in a night basis for a 7 game series?  I say NO!  Make this change while at the same time rewarding the team that makes the last spot in the draft with a top 5 lottery pick.  You reward the teams that want to win and take away from the teams that seemingly want ten centers on their team, Philadelphia.  I can’t even tell any of your players apart with the exception of Noel and Covington.  Noel is your big man and Covington should be your shooting guard.  The rest should be sent to the D-League along with your management team for building a team of centers in a league full of guards.

DiRTy DiMEs Tuesday

March 24th, 2015

To go directly to our daily NBA breakdown DiRTy Plays, just click here.

Today, I wanted to take some time and provide you all with a breakdown of the last five games as it pertains to each position for your Daily NBA Fantasy games.  Each day I look to provide you with Absolute Must Haves, Notables and Sleepers.  Within each of these categories I will look to provide you with players that you should consider taking in each night’s games, who will out perform their projection and how injuries will impact other players performance for that night.  FD_Last5_overallIn addition to this daily insight, I am going to provide you a weekly breakdown of players by position as it pertains to both Fan Duel and DraftKings.  So let’s take a look at the Overall Performances over the last 5 games for Fan Duel.  The overall, number one, player was Anthony Davis.  He comes in slightly higher than Westbrook but it should be noted that Davis did not play in all 5 games as such his average is based on last 3 games.  The notable players that I want to highlight for you are Brook Lopez and Eric Bledsoe.  Both of these players have been playing great, Bledsoe, primarily due to Knight being out.  Look for that production to decline slightly.  As for Lopez, I do not expect a decline in production.  Since acquiring Thad Young it has had a major impact in terms of where Lopez is able to play on the court.  DK_last5_OverallHe has been able to plug the middle and post-up down low, where he is highly productive. Moving onto DraftKingsthere really isn’t much change in the information. A slight modification in the ranking of the players but the same 10 exist.  If #KingJames will play the full game, he will go over 50+ fantasy points each night.  The problem is that the Cavs are playing mostly Eastern Conference teams down the stretch and they simply dominate these folks.  That means that for your spend James isn’t logging enough minutes to continue to pay those high salary prices.  Look for our Notables to compliment your lineup in these considerations.  It should be noted that I am in the process of defining a salary limit per player.  This key performance metric will identify the maximum spend per player. This will allow for you to quickly identify players that are too expensive regardless of output.  The simple example here is Westbrook.  He currently costs over $13,000 on both gaming sites.  That means that he is approximately 22% of your spend.  We know that in order to cash you must hit 330 on Fan Duel and 300 on DraftKings.  That means that in order for Westbrook to be of value for that spend he would need to produce a 72.6 on Fan Duel and a 66 on DraftKings.  Those are high numbers to get to and while he certainly has the capability of that, this means you have to find two or three other players that are going to fall in our Notable or Sleeper segments in order to fill your lineup.  Why not take another Must Have that is only 15% of your spend and now you can get two high-end Notables.

Point Guard Breakdown

FD_last5_pg

Clearly, Westbrook, leads this category but I just wanted to point out to you that Chris Paul has been averaging almost 50+ fantasy points.  Two other folks that have been creeping up the list here are Elfrid Payton and Reggie Jackson.  Both of these guys have been teetering on the triple-double mayhem and if Westbrook wasn’t averaging that over his last 10 games, these guys would be highlighted on ESPN more often.  DK_last5_pgAnother guy to consider would be Goran Dragic.  He has been averaging 36.1 fantasy points per game and with the Heat battling for position into the playoffs, look for that to continue.  A disappointing player, Steph Curry, has not played well.  He tops our list of over priced players and should not be considered on daily lineups until his salary declines below $9,000.  Another young player in Kyrie Irving, is right there with Curry for most over priced player at this position.  Sure they might each go off and put up 50 for you but more often than not they will put around 30 fantasy points and you could have had more production from guys like Jeremy Lin and George Hill. Don’t take the risk on these guys until further notice.

Shooting Guard Breakdown

James Harden certainly leads this list and should be considered the best SG in the game right now. He will most likely win the MVP, unless folks turn to Curry.  I say without Howard, the Rockets haven’t skipped a beat and that is why he is my MVP right now.  JJ Redick, Randy Foye and Avery Bradley come in at the bottom of this top 10 list but are players you should consider each night simply due to the fact that they don’t cost too much.  DK_last5_sgIf you can fill your lineup with guys that all fall in our Notable segment, you will have the most consistency in terms of production.  If two or three of these guys go off and put up 50+ to compliment the 30+ you will get from everyone else, this is how you cash every day in daily NBA fantasy games.  So many players try to shoot the moon and go for first place.  That would be great if it happened but the math says to put your money on consistency and you will prosper.  Some fun facts to consider when playing NBA fantasy.  You only need to cash in 33 out of 100 games when playing a $3 entry in order to break even.  If you win 40 games out of 100, you will profit $60. FD_last5_sgWith our insight and daily breakdown this should be of no concern.  In fact most of our subscribers are cashing over 70% of the time.  We play the games too and provide you with a weekly update of our progress. D-Wade has been very productive of late and even earned the Eastern Conference Player of the Week last week. Unfortunately, this will turn him into an over priced player based on the salary algorithms of both Fan Duel and DraftKings very soon.  If he hoovers around $8,000 then you are safe.  Anything above that and you should consider guys like Danny Green or DeMar DeRozan.

Small Forward Breakdown

Yes, of course, #KingJames is going to top this list but did you know that Gallinari has actually been one of the most consistent players since Marvin Hunt took over for Brian Shaw.  He was moved into the starting lineup at that time and since then the Nuggets look like the team we expected to have in Denver from the beginning of the season.  FD_Last5_sfGuess all it took was putting a guy in place that listened to his players and encourages a style of play conducive to the talent of the team.  Shaw, I really have nothing against you but I must say, you need to learn how to communicate with guys in their 20’s or you won’t have a head coaching job in the NBA.  It doesn’t matter who you played with or who you coached under, what matters is winning.  Look at D’Antony, he is probably going to be the guy here in Denver and why is that?  It is because he likes to play up and down and doesn’t care about defense. DK_last5_sfYes, I know that this will never win a championship but that isn’t what Denver is all about anyway. So next time you get the job, listen to the local media and your team, you will last a bit longer.  The only other notable player to consider from this list is Kawhi Leonard.  In fact, if you were to play him and James on nights where they are both playing, those lineups will cash 42.6% of the time. That is note worthy considering I already told you that at 40% you are profitable by a fairly high margin. Add some other key guys from other positions and now you have a shot at finishing high. The Spurs need to keep winning games in the West so they are going to have to play their key guys.  This means Leonard.

Power Forward Breakdown

I already told you that Anthony Davis has been the most productive fantasy player of late and so it is no surprise he tops this list.  Look at second place, Aldridge, almost 19 points less per game.  DK_last5_pfThat is also the largest gap across all positions.  This position also happens to be the most productive on both DraftKings and Fan Duel.  My suggestion is to spend your money on the big guys and find the Sleepers and Notables for your SG and PG positions.  They are much easier to locate and have a much higher rate of out performing their projection. There are three notable players on this list that for now are still not cap casualties and should be considered each night.  They are Kenneth Faried, Marcus Morris and Nikola Mirotic.  Let’s face facts, the closer in Chicago is Mirotic.  Did you know that he leads the NBA in points scored in the 4th quarter over the last 10 games.  Neither did I until I researched it last night.  Pretty amazing considering some of the MVP caliber performances of late.  That just means on your daily NBA fantasy lineup, don’t sweat it if he only has 15 points going into the second half or even the 4th quarter because here comes the boom.  FD_last5_pfHe will get close to 40 fantasy points per night.  Faried and Marcus Morris have seen significant increases in time on the floor and as we already pointed out the Nuggets are just moving around a lot more.  This means high rebound and high point production for Faried. He cannot play on a half-court offensive team but the run and gun he loves.  As for Morris and yes, I said Marcus NOT Markief, has been lights out.  He has put up at least 30 fantasy points in each of his last 7 games and since moving to the starting SF position he has been their best player. Unfortunately, Knight is expected back soon and so it is uncertain what this will mean to his playing time and role with the team.

Center Breakdown

Our last but certainly not least category for the day is our Center position.  This is the second highest producing position of your Fan Duel lineup.  FD_Last5_CentersThe guard position is that for DraftKings.  That all comes down to the fact that turnovers are not as heavily weighted and you earn extra points for making threes.  If you can find the big guy who busts threes and rebounds well, he is your marquee guy.  Brook Lopez has been a guy who is climbing the ladder and quickly.  This means take him while you can because just like Gobert, who only 3 weeks ago, cost under $5,500 has now increased to $8,000 per night, so too will Lopez.  Keep in mind that you don’t want to go too cheap here and so other notable players on this list are Enes Kanter and Jo Noah. If you follow us at all, we have been on the Gobert train for quite some time now and he looks great if you watch any of his games.  DK_last5_CentersHe is the flying frenchman that makes the Jazz very difficult to score against and thus the reason they are leading the NBA in defensive points allowed since the All-Star break. That said, Kanter was traded to OKC at the deadline and has been averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds per game. This marks one of the only trades I have followed where both teams have made out like bandits.  It was great for both players to get out from underneath one another and get into styles of play that allow for them to shine.  Enjoy the show for the last couple of weeks as both of these guys will most likely be sitting at home watching the playoffs this year.  That just means look out next year!

DiRTy Plays – Hit that 3

March 19th, 2015

Shots Up

Usually I would start out my weekly post by providing you with a recap of the fabulous Wednesday night of NBA basketball but I figured I would change it up this week and talk about RESTING players. Has the NBA really come to this already?  When I was growing up, I hated being taken out of the game for even a couple of minutes.  During the length of a season as a teenager, I would have games for the high school starting in November, the season would run through the end of February, mainly because we were a top 5 team in the state and we would play around 30 games.  Then you get to AAU.  At that time, I would end up playing a 50 game season from March until July and that didn’t count the weekend tournaments.  Back to back’s have nothing on that grueling schedule because our back to backs were in the same day.  Then you drive to the next city and you are playing another 2 games the following day.  NBA players get to ride on in luxury cars, chartered air planes, stay in the nicest hotels and eat whatever the team nutritionist prepares for them.  They have everything handed to them on a silver platter and now I’m stuck, as a fan, having to watch a bunch of D-League players compete against NBA Stars?  This is a travesty to which I cannot begin to believe.  Michael Jordan never sat out a game unless he was injured.  Everyone remembers when he played in the NBA Finals with the flu and all he did was put up an MVP performance and win the game.  Now I review the injury list and provide those details for your daily NBA fantasy gaming knowledge; seemingly I end up finding at least one guy, every night, that has an “illness” and he is doubtful.

klay_restingI couldn’t agree more with Klay Thompson’s father, who went off in an interview about the Warriors sitting his son down against the Nuggets last week.  He was upset and mortified that a guy in his 20’s couldn’t play 4 games in 5 nights.  It’s a grueling season they say, I say we are dealing with executives who only care about one thing….Assets.  If their asset provides any inclination that he might leave the team because let’s face it, the executives of the NBA have no control over players, then they put a system together to rest their players thinking this might allow the player to think the executive really cares about their health and longevity.  Trust me, when Klay Thompson can no longer hit jumpers and play defense he will be traded to the Nuggets to finish out his career in a never ending, we play for 9th place, environment and those games he sat out in his 20’s will be lost and for what.  Who really loses in this tragedy, it’s you and me, the fans who buy the tickets to come and see their favorite players.  More often than not we live in cities that simply can obtain nor attempt to keep star players like Denver and so we are stuck with trying to go to games where the opponent has players we want to see in person.  You buy the $50 tickets, $9 for a beer, $5 for a hot dog, sit down for the tip only to find out the guy you came to see will be sitting longer than you will during the game and now you have to watch some guy from Serbia that you have never heard of still light up your terrible home team.  The bigger question here is why in the hell would the Nuggets sit any players this year.  After the Warriors did it to them, the Nuggets thought, oh we need to follow this path, mainly because they have no plan whatsoever and they sit Faried, Galo and Lawson.  resting playersIf anything these guys should have to play 40 minutes a game as punishment for the manner in which they conducted themselves with Shaw at the helm.  Instead, coach Melvin Hunt, gets the team on a slight role, playing somewhat to the level we would expect and he gets called into the principals office to remind him, “We SUCK”!  We want a better draft pick, stop winning games and so Hunt is told to sit players.  Guess what it worked, the Nuggets lost and hopefully they will lose just as many fans over it.

It’s On The Way

To lighten the mood, I figured I would take a moment to dive into a budding superstar that I have been talking about for weeks, Rudy Gobert.  will_farrell_shootingThis Flying Frenchman, has come off the bench and into the starting role for the Utah Jazz, only to become one of the most dominating forces in the NBA right now.  He stands at 7 foot 1 inch and can touch the rim from his tippy toes.  He is a natural rebounding maching, averaging over 16 rebounds per game since Kanter was traded to OKC.  Most of us aren’t Jazz fans but let me tell you, Gobert, gives you a reason to watch them.  This young team will fend for a playoff spot in the West and if they played in the East, they would be in the top 3.  Once he learns to add a 15 foot jump shot and put on a few pounds, he might be a guy you get to watch on the national stage because the Jazz will put up W’s on a consistent basis.  The best news about this young man is the fact that this is only his second season and really his rookie year.  gobert_mar10The Jazz add Derrick Favors and Gordon Hayward, who are also young stars with a starting back court that are also rookies.  The NBA beat writers keep talking about Minnesota and the stars they have up there in the north but that’s all they are, Northmen.  The Flying Frenchman and the frontline of the Rocky Mountains, lies in Utah and assuming they can keep this talent together, no don’t REST them, these guys will be fun to watch for years to come and remind me of a young team in OKC of 5 years ago.

Score It

Over the past six months, I have spent countless hours analyzing sports information, watching television shows, listening to sports radio and of course watching all the games you can imagine.  To say the least, this job never stops, it never quits, it’s seven days a week.  So why do it you ask?  The answer is simple, So You Don’t Have To!  All of this analysis is being done, programs built, report generation is being automated and we are almost to a point where you, our reader, can take advantage of all these tools.  We have added a lot more of this information even today so check out DiRTy Plays – Week of March 16th, for all the insight and information you will need to play daily NBA fantasy games.  We not only provide you with projections and an optimal lineup, we also tell you why these players have the projections they have.  basket_on_fireWe have implemented an Absolute system that will identify players in specific salary ranges that you absolutely have to play for tonight’s contests.  We are currently giving away a free Platinum membership if you contact us to the next 15 individuals who sign up.  What will you get you ask?  It’s simple, you will get the full list of projections, access to one of our data analysts for any questions or additional insight you might have, reports will be emailed to you on a daily basis and as our complete lineup optimization tool is being finalized you will get to beta test it’s functionality.  Yes, this costs you nothing and now you get all of the tools that I use to build my earnings each and every day.  Yesterday marked the 24th consecutive day of profit on FanDuel and 7th straight day on DraftKings.  If you want us to further analyze your playing style, projected profit margins based on a certain playing type and contest level, we are happy to do that.  I share this with you today so that you understand that we want to win with you, not against you and we play too.  We don’t just throw out a bunch of information just to leave you with a bunch of numbers, we provide in depth analysis of what this information can be used for and better decision making overall.  Work Smarter and you will find your earnings going up each and every day.  It might only be that you make a few dollars a day to get started but we have designed a systematic approach to how much you should spend, what tournaments and games to play and when to double-down and increase your overall profit margin.  It’s not as simple as play this lineup on one contest and now I should make a secondary income.  Let me help you build this pillar of revenue strategically.  At the same time, I am not going to sit here and believe that you have nothing to offer like many of these information sites.  If you would like to see something different, have an idea for a certain metric but aren’t sure how to get the proper data to review it, contact me, and I will figure it out for you.  Now let’s see our progress to date as we will look to provide a weekly update in our Score It section every Thursday!  One last note, we are working on baseball now so look for that information to be coming in April.
